Specific Fic Search: Rabies-like disease and telepathic alien cures (K/S): FOUND
I have very specific memories of this fic and cannot find it anywhere! It's driving me round the bend.
Timeframe:
I read it early this year, sometime between February and April, on Ao3. I started trying to re-find it no later than May.
'Verse/Setting:
It is reboot fic set after STID. Possibly the author's note mentioned the two TOS eps that the story would have occurred between had it happened in the Prime 'verse.
Ships/Charas:
Jim, Spock, McCoy, and Uhura with major roles, with fading Spock/Uhura and pre-slash Jim/Spock. The story ends implying slash but doesn't quite get there.
Plot:
An away team beams down to check out a research station and finds what was supposed to be an M class planet lifeless and covered in gray dust. They find one survivor and bring him back. The survivor is very sick.
The survivor develops violent tendencies and bites a nurse, then dies. Shortly thereafter the nurse falls ill and the course of the disease is the same. Several people are quickly infected before McCoy figures out the pattern.
Of course Jim gets himself bitten.
The course of the disease is slower in him because of the protective effect of Khan's blood.
A mysterious transmission to the bridge announces that Jim can be saved if the ship goes to a certain planet and the one who is most important to him accompanies him to a certain location on-planet. They go to the coordinates. The planet that is there is not supposed to be there. They suspect a trap but have no choice, as Jim is getting sicker.
Spock beams down and basically carries Jim to the specificed coordinates, waiting all the while for the madness to take him. But Jim does not get violent. There is a scene with falling in a river and Jim's fever-heat helping to warm Spock as they cuddle.
When they reach the specified place, it is empty. Jim passes out/possibly dies and Spock panics. Aliens appear and whisk them away.
Cut to Jim waking up cured. Spock and Jim have an audience with the alien leader. The race is strongly telepathic. Possibly interdimensional (hence a planet being where no planet was supposed to be). They call the disease "the hunger" and prepare more of the cure for Spock and Jim to take back to the Enterprise. They say that Jim did not go mad because of his deep feeling for Spock.
I don't remember the exact way it ended but it was something like implying the both of them were going to figure out what they meant to each other, and Uhura breaking up with Spock sadly but amicably.
I think the author must have taken it down because with that level of detail I don't see how I could have missed re-finding it. Does anyone know the fic or have a copy?
