Looking for a Specific Fic

I am looking for a fic that I forgot to bookmark.  I don't remember much, but a specific scene sticks with me.  Kirk has just returned to Earth after the end of the movie, and his mother and his stepfather rush up to him.  One of them says, "We saw you on T.V."  Kirk is disgusted because they haven't spoken in so long and they don't tell him anything about missing him or worrying about him, instead they immediately focus on the media attention Kirk is getting.  Kirk is finally in a good place emotionally, and tells Winona quite forcefully that he has tried so hard to make her proud, but he is done now, and he will not spend another moment thinking about her because he doesn't need her approval anymore.  It was a powerful scene!   Thanks in advance!

No, that's not exactly it. It's remarkably similar, except the scene I'm remembering has both Winona and Frank waiting for Jim after the disaster. The fic I'm looking for doesn't have any reconciliation in it. Thank you anyway!
