Kirk bonding with Spock to save his life

I was wondering if anyone remembered a story about Kirk bonding with another friend and not knowing about it until he died? His friend was a telepath from another world. Kirk knew this person in the academy or served with him on another star ship possibly. And I think he starts getting sick and Bones or Spock figures out what has happened. The only was to save Kirk is by Spock bonding with him.

Hope someone can help me find this story :)
