FOUND: Transgender Kirk

Hi, I'm looking for a story in which Captain Kirk is turned into a woman by an alien artifact and even though she could easily change back she chooses to remain female because that's what she always felt herself to be.  She hadn't had surgery prior to the academy because it would have limited her options for command and because Frank was so abusive.  There is a hearing to determine whether Kirk is fit to command.  I think the story was Kirk/McCoy.  It originally appeared in a comment thread and was many parts long.  All assistance is gratefully received
