Lost Fics

[identity profile] d8rkmessngr.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] startrekficfinder
Hi,

I had quite a few favorite Star Trek Voyager fics I had printed out into binders.

Storm damage has pretty much destroyed my fanfic binders and I'm desperately trying to track them down. I found a few but am stuck with others. I hope someone out there has a copy or can point me in the right direction:

1. Which Page - Emily Gardner FOUND!
2. Realizations - Abra Mitchell FOUND!
3. Holding B'Elanna - Julie Evans FOUND!
4. Ghosts - Andra Marie Mueller FOUND!
5. Lovers & Friends - Brenda Shaffer-Shiring FOUND!
6. Fresh Deck - BEKi (aka Dodger Winslow)
7. Re-Notification: A Letter From Home - BEKi (aka Dodger Winslow) FOUND!

My email address is d8rkmessngr at gmail.

Fingers crossed. Thank you.

Eh, that's pretty much my worst nightmare... O_o I have, like, thousands of fics bookmarked on my pinboard page (yes, I'm an obsessive like that... :D) and every-time I discover that some old link isn't working anymore there's moments of blinding panic until I can find a working link again. (When I can.) So you can say I'm used to fic-retrieval.. :D

Re-Notification: A Letter From Home was in Delta Quadrant 7, which was a fanzine. Sadly there don't seem to be free copies of it, just pay ones from Orion Press.

There is this, though: http://dodger-winslow.livejournal.com/2528.html

This one is titled 'Notification' instead of Re-Notification, so may not be the same fic, though you could PM the author and see if they can point you to the fic you're after. (Same for Fresh Deck.)

About 'Realizations', that looks like it was an alt.startrek.creative post. There's good news; the ASC folks are trying to migrate all of their archive to a new system for displaying the fics. I poked at their current archive but couldn't find this one, however they're responsive to comments on their new blog, so I suspect you could ask them there: http://trekiverse.wordpress.com/

Oh, I didn't know that Trekverse was only a part of the total archive and that it was all a big work in progress. So, there's more fics to come, this is fantastic news! *g* Thanks for the link to the blog ;)

ETA: Actually it's all thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yyzeff who mentioned alt.startrek.creative. Plus the folks over at ds9-rewatch told me that the old usenet archive was still available on google groups. So great! For some reason I only knew of ASCEML on yahoo groups...

Yes, this. I download copies of all fics I bookmark for this reason, because I have seen way too many favorites disappear over the years! I love archive.org for this reason, but even it doesn't always have everything.

For a particularly beloved fic series (the Voyager and DS9 stories by Peg and Macedon (Little Otter), I even worked with AO3 to create accounts for Peg and Macedon, reformatted their fics manually, and uploaded them to AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/collections/Macedons_Taberna) after the website they were on died. So that they wouldn't be lost and forgotten!

Thank you for tracking these down--I've never read them, but I'm looking forward to it!

/I download copies of all fics I bookmark for this reason/ - LOL, actually I do that too, only... there's never too much back-up, you know? :D And, yes, thank goodness for The Wayback Machine!
Peg and Macedon! OMG, I owe you so many thanks! I remember discovering (and being blown away by) the Talking Stick/Circle series and their other wonderful works for the first time on the AO3! *g*

Trekiverse, as any good archive is always a work in progress, sometimes more than others.

Currently accessible via in static index (www.trekiverse.org) are 15,000+ works posted to the Alt.StarTrek.Creative Hierarchy from 1991 to 2009. There are some stories missing, some due to needs permission, some due to archving error, but when we're finished everything there now and more will be in a nice searchable accessible format.

Check the blog for more information and an opening date, soon.

Macedon and Peg's works are also accessible via their original archive location at Trekiverse. They've never been lost.

I should also note that Macedon was the 1997 winner of the ASC Award's Alara Roger's Award for Best Author.

True ... but considering that I've always found the Trekiverse archive to be just about impossible to use unless all you want is a random Star Trek fic, it wasn't very helpful. And it depends on what you mean by "lost," too. At the time I asked for and received permission to put the fics up on AO3, if you googled "Macedon talking stick circle" or any of Macedon and Peg's fic, the first page of hits was people posting to websites and discussion boards bemoaning that the fic was gone and asking where they could find a copy. And pretty much always being told "sorry, wish I had a copy, I think it's just gone forever." For all those people, the fic was pretty darn lost. I used the Trekiverse copies to reformat and upload to AO3, and even knowing it was there and what the titles and author names were, it was difficult to find all the stories. And I still occasionally get comments from people who have loved those stories for decades and have been periodically searching for them since Macedon's Taberna went down, and never found them on Trekiverse but have found them now on AO3.

I am so, so happy that Trekiverse is getting new archive software. There are a lot of excellent fics there that's been largely inaccessible for years. I mean, the fics were there, but good luck finding what you wanted.

Thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] yyzeff, for mentioning the Trekiverse blog and directing people there...it's very much appreciated! Stephen and I noticed in our Wordpress stats that we'd gotten quite a few referrals from this thread, which is how we found our way here. We're grateful for the help in spreading the word about our imminent relaunch...not to mention that with our eFiction "makeover" we will have a real search engine for the first time since we lost our original one in a server crash over a decade ago. Well, back to converting/transferring more stories to the new archive...

The Trekiverse blog can be found at http://trekiverse.wordpress.com and automatically reposted to:
http://trekiverse-asc.tumblr.com
http://www.facebook.com/Trekiverse
http://twitter.com/trekiverse

And if anyone knows a way to get Wordpress to automatically repost to LiveJournal, I'd love to know how to do it...

FYI, Trekiverse has both Notification and Re-Notification - easily findable in the new archive, which will be going live in approximately a week...

I find that any good work that's been out there for a long point of time will have the first few pages of a search engine saying that it's gone can anyone find a copy. Heck, I actually had someone say that about a fic on a group owned by the author of that work while the author was on vacation.

I realize that Trekiverse did not have a search engine. However, it's lack does not rise to largely inaccessible, any more than a well organized library was in the days of the real card catalog. All stories were stored in an alpha by title format by series, by author, and some common pairings. In the many years that I have been a member of the Trekiverse Archive Team, I've yet to see a case when an archived fic were you knew the author and the title wasn't fairly easily findable.

In the case of Talking Stick, which I will use for an example, I can just go to the Voyager page, click on general stories, scroll through the index to find where it fit in the alphabet (page 93 Surprise Inspection to Talking Stick/Circle 2: Circle) and there it is, next to last on the page. (clicking on the author name will bring up a list of everything by that author) Now I admit that the series being before the title for this series was not the best archiving decision made, but I didn't do any searches what so ever, just knew that it was a Voyager story.

It was no more difficult that it is to find a book in a library. Do not call it largely inaccessible. It did not require luck. It required that you knew it was in the archive, the title, and the series.

It should be noted that on the completion of the conversion, the old formatted static archive will remain accessible with fresh runs of the index. Any story links to the old archive will still work.

Yay, an updated achive, with even more fics and a search engine! This is wonderful news!! I was so excited when yyzeff told me! *g* Thanks so much to you guys for the hard work, it's really appreciated! ❤
BTW I don't know how you'd go to make a mirror on LJ but I found this link that may be of help? Meanwhile setting up a RSS feed journal on DW it's ridiculosly easy, here it is. *g*

We're just as excited - and looking forward to opening the new doors for visitors! Promise you'll visit early and often! :-)

Thanks for the link about mirroring Wordpress to LiveJournal, but unfortunately that plugin can only be used for self-hosted blogs running Wordpress software - our blog is on Wordpress.com, which is a blog-hosting servcie, and you can't tinker with the code by adding third-party plugins. Oh, well.

As for the Dreamwidth feed journal, I had no idea you could do things like that. I mean, I knew we had an RSS feed, but I wasn't aware someone could set up the feed publicly like that. The views don't seem to be reflected in our site stats... thanks for letting us know about that, anyway.

Oh, no, I don't think that the dreamwidth feed could influence your stats either... *shakes head* But for people like me mostly based on DW it's still really useful to keep up with the updates. ;) And since DW makes it so easy to set up, lately I usually follow my favorite podcasts and other blogs on external platforms via rss feed just this way. :)

Stat-watching on our Wordpress blog isn't critical to our archive mission so we can deal. :-) Mainly we're happy to get the word out of our imminent relaunch. Tell your friends. We're back, baby! :-D

If you are still looking for Fresh Deck, I can probably dig up a copy for you. Not sure where it is, exactly, but if you still want it, I will try to dig through my files and see if I can find you one I can send you as a PDF. Can't guarantee it will be the edited version, which means it might have some really amusing typos in it, but as far as I know, Randy has never put any of the Voyager fanfic on the net and all the Voyager paper zines are out of print. Let me know if you want me to dig.

*sigh* Forgot to sign in before I made that comment. Under the "not anonymous" setting, I'm pretty sure I can dig up a copy of Assim if you want it. Let me know if you're still looking and I'll see what I can find, and if I can turn it into a PDF or something.
