I do remember reading a fic that starts out with Kirk studying architecture, and it had a lot of details about the work space he (and the other students, like Uhura) were in and the tools they were using on their projects. I don't know if he goes on to work for Spock because I didn't finish it. Does that beginning sound familiar?
