I lost this fic when I was first getting into the Abrams verse.  It is a conversation between Kirk and McCoy and I think it was in the mess either at the Academy or on the Enterprise.  McCoy wants to know just why Kirk isn't upset that Spock tried to strangle him when McCoy is still very upset.  Kirk just looks at him sort of blankly and explains that this sort of thing is what happens when a Vulcan loses emotional control and that all Vulcans reacted to anger like that in Surak's time.
