jim/spock friendship

The story I am looking for is largely about Spock and Jim's developing relationship. Near the start of the story Spock mentions how vulcuns allow people a certain distance into their personal space depending on the relationship held between them and the person in their space. Jim makes it his goal to work his way as far into Spocks personal space as possible. I'm sure they end of getting together in the end.

There may be a scene in the story where Jim, Sulu and chekov go rock cliimbing while investigating a deserted planet and get attacked by some  kind of starving bat like creature. Also there is an alien scientist onboard who is short and looks like a child, but she is way old.

Oh! I believe you are referring to my story, The Flavor of Laughter (http://brytewolf.livejournal.com/11881.html)! And unfortunately I haven't gotten to finish it yet - RL can be a bugger sometimes!! Though I still do have every intention of getting back to it when I finally get the time!
