They were at the academy and Spock is an instructor. Uhura was pining after Spock, and she didn't know Spock and Kirk were together. Kirk just flirted with her a lot. So one day, she walks into Spock's residence while Kirk and Spock are having sex. She proceeds to call Kirk all sorts of names, and Spock protects him. When she leaves, she hears Kirk saying something along the lines of- "why can I never be happy on my birthday?" Something like that. I want to say that they're bonded. I also want to say the story shows them meeting before the academy and getting together, but I'm not entirely sure.
