I know there's a couple of stories about this (and similar RTYIs are totally welcome as well, even if they're not exactly the one I'm trying to describe/find), but the one(s?) I'm looking for has Spock basically being a condescending ass (except in a totally logical way of course) when Kirk first starts as captain, because he sees it as helping Kirk figure out what he's doing wrong, except he never offers any praise or positive feedback, only criticism, and Kirk tries harder and harder to do things the "right" way to get his approval, since Spock is super-duper smart and also has way more experience than him as he's actually served on a starship before, so Kirk kinda looks up to him and stuff (and also they're supposed to have an epic friendship and all), but still every time he tries something and then looks hopefully to Spock like a freaking puppy hoping for a dropped scrap or even just a head pat and a "good boy," Spock still finds fault with something-- and in front of the rest of the crew no less, totally undermining Kirk's still fragile authority-- until finally, Kirk breaks and is basically like WHY DO YOU HATE ME I CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT ;(((((( and Spock's like WAIT WHAT OOPS ACCIDENTALLY A JERK. And then it may or may not devolve into Spirk, but it's fine if it doesn't.
...Also, like I said, I know there's a couple/few stories out there with some/all of those characteristics, and I may have mashed some together in my brain, so if you can think of one that has a couple but not all of the things I mentioned, it could quite easily be the elusive one I'm looking for.
And even if it's not, I really like those stories generally, if they're well written, so I would love to have a few new ones to read as well. :))) Slash, pre-slash, or friendship are all fine.

Date: 2014-04-28 11:36 pm (UTC)I definitely read it on AO3, had it bookmarked and everything, but since that's not what the whole story is about, it never caught my eye when I was looking for that particular story. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Date: 2014-04-29 06:30 am (UTC)There's also a really excellent one where they have all these miscommunications... well. This is the one I always end up finding instead of the one you found, whenever I'm actually looking for By Your Side:
How We Are (but not how we're going to be) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/304401) by alpha_hydra ... Summary: Even when they hate each other, they're still sort of falling in love.
...and a snippet of my bookmark notes for it: ...the title is very apt, too. I loved watching Jim and Spock being genuinely frustrated trying to communicate with each other for awhile, and not understanding why they weren't succeeding, and then slowly floundering their way through figuring it out and learning to be there for each other. Absolutely wonderful. :)))

I love the scene during the briefing. The rest of the series is good too :-)
ETA : I never really organised my fanfic. It's just separated in fandom folders, and read/not read...
