Saw the great recommendations just below in tiger_of_paper's request for Spirk related fics which leads me to wonder -

Any recommendations for similarly plot-driven AOS fics that are gen in nature?

If you're okay with TOS/AOS crossovers, KCScribbler (http://kcscribbler.livejournal.com/322148.html") has The Games We Play and Second Best Destiny.

And if you don't mind self-recs, I did one series (http://archiveofourown.org/series/51924) of plot-driven AOS stories, though they're not long (9k to 20k each).

...I just realized I didn't mention Mijan's academy series (http://archiveofourown.org/series/5229). They're more epic friendship, so that might not be what you're after, however they're definitely plotty.

I've read - and loved - The Games We Play and Second Best Destiny - and they are exactly the type of story I'm thinking of. Thanks for the reminder and the recs on the other stories. I'll be sure to check them out.

Oh Boy! I didn't recognize your name as your author name but I've read every one of your AOS stories (raps knuckles against head if I've not commented on my love of them before).

They're one of the few stories I've actually bookmarked to read again. So, you know, feel free to write more in that fandom. I, for one, would be thrilled beyond measure.

For the Long Haul: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1012756. It's a fun, funny Jim-centric adventure fic. Jim's on a boring mission for his Academy course requirements, and then The Plot Thickens. It has most of the main crew in it, minus Scotty since he was probably on Delta Vega at the time.
