I'm looking for a fic that I read originally on AO3 that features Kirk/Spock. It was really long with only one chapter (like, definitely over 10,000 words, maybe even over 30,000 words). It was centered around a few scenes that came up again and again: a mission where Jim's feet were swollen by worms, Jim and Spock playing chess, a mission where Jim gets jealous of Sybok because Spock never told him they're brothers (and Jim misunderstands), and perhaps some others I can't remember.
Jim had this gray box where he collected rocks from all the places they visited. I think in particular he had a green rock for Cupcake...or maybe it was for someone else. Spock had a black rock with gold from a cave they were specifically told not to take any ore from. And the last part featured Spock designating a Vulcan red rock for Jim.
In my recollection, the fic was especially centered around how they didn't mesh together, how they misunderstood each other, how they thought the worst of each other. How they brought out the worst of each other. But in other times, how the only other person who they could stand to be with was the other, and how for each other there was no one like the other.
In the end Sybok asks Spock something along the lines of "If you're so miserable/you're so frustrated with your commanding officer, why don't you just leave?" in which Spock answers, "I could not live without the other half of my soul," or something of the like.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE someone help me! It's killing me that I didn't bookmark it before and I'm desperately dying to find this!
