Under-rated Kirk-centric fic recs?

You ever feel like you're not done reading a fandom but your ability to find good fic you haven't yet read has slowed dramatically?

Could you please rec me your favourite fics that you think are under-appreciated, under-recced, or just plain under-known?  As much as I think things like Ceres_Libera's Switch, Waldorph's Illogical series, and Deastar's So Wise We Grow and How Many Roads? are all utterly incredible, they're too well known to be what I'm looking for here.

I'd prefer if recs were:
a) Kirk-centric or at least including Kirk as a major character,
b) AOS or an AU with the AOS characters,
c) slash, gen or het are all fine. Please consider labelling the ship (or lack thereof) as my preferences depend on mood and other people's enjoyment mileage may vary.
d) not RPF,
e) of reasonable writing quality - minimal POV breaks, only occasional grammatical issues, characters that act their age or have a really good reason for not...etc.

Problem Child (http://ksarchive.com/viewstory.php?sid=4907) by TDazz - if you liked So Wise We Grow, this is very similar, but with Kirk's child instead of Spock's

Sadly, the two I can think of are mainly spock centric. Kirk gets pov's but not nearly as much as spock. Hope you find some!

Ah, I'm not too concerned with whose POV the story is from (although I prefer to avoid random head-hopping), just that Kirk is one of the major characters of the fic. Spock (or anyone else) is welcome to also be a major character and/or be the perspective the story is told from!

Not sure how you feel about self-recs, but if you're okay with them, a lot of the Trek I've written is Kirk-centric in some way or another (even when it's from another character's POV). I don't ship him too significantly (it's all either gen or sometimes Gaila/Jim), so the only significant pairing tends to be Uhura/Spock.

Quick AO3 filtering link (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Niobium/works?fandom_id=601802), and I'll note that Dawn With No Chorus is really a drabble/ficlet collection so it has Kirk-centric pieces but the whole thing varies. The chapters are labeled by the major players.

Oooh. I loved Beneath the Enormous Sky when I read it maybe a year ago. The concept was very cool and you pulled it and the characters off well. It's probably due for a re-read and I'll definitely check out your other works while I'm at it...

Both of these are Kirk/Spock with mostly (if not all) Kirk POV (though neither are in the first person).

And I don't actually care whose POV the fics are from, I just prefer when the author has good awareness and control over their character(s) perspective(s). So if you have any other under-recognized fics you think would suit the request that aren't Kirk's POV, feel free to share them!

A story that completely brought me into the K/S fandom, and which is on comparatively few rec lists, is 'Veritas', by theproblematique (all of her writing is fabulous and there is a lot on her work on LJ that isn't posted on AO3).

Also, even if you don't usually read TOS, there is this stunning story which talks to the heart of any K/S shipper (and you can put your own voices to it, as it is mainly comprised of messages which are increasingly honest exchanges, between Kirk & Spock, when they are torn apart by duty, time and space and... then...OMG!) Anyway, PLEASE give it a go, people, 'Communication' by Jenna Hilary Sinclair:

I've read Veritas, though it's probably time for another go at it since I'm blanking on most of the plot. :)

As for the TOS one, with "stunning" and "OMG!" as descriptors, I'll have to give it a try. Besides, I have a weakness for well-done epistolary style, so it sounds great.
