rebuilding a family home

The story as I remember it is the seven main characters are in Iowa standing at burned out house, learning about Kirk ' s youth. They decide that they need a place to gather at between missions. They will need a lab, a workshop, a telescope, covered pool/spa, library, etc etc. Anyone remember who and where they post?
