I read this a while ago, and all I can remember about it is that Jim becomes a female after going through some sort of door and accepts his transition. The Starfleet brass throw a fit about it and put Kirk through a hearing. During the hearing McCoy becomes the speaker of the Enterprise crew and says that if Starfleet kick Jim out, then the entire crew will follow her.

Spock also speaks up, saying that the Vulcun colony is interested in this doorway, since it turns males into females, there are Vulcun males willing to undergo transformation to help their people prosper or something along those lines.

I think it may have been McKirk, but I'm not sure.
