I feel like recently I've read a whole bunch of bad!winona fics, which I love, but now I'm in the mood for something different.  I'm looking for reboot stories in which Jim obviously adores his mother and she is his hero because she is totally badass.  Preferably something taking place after the movie, where the rest of the crew meets her, but pre-movie stuff is great too if you have some.

Also, and I'm not actually sure this exists, but is there anything with a similar scenario but with Sam instead of Winona?  Mostly when I come across Sam in reboot fics it just seems to be a small mention about him running away and abandoning Jim, but I'd love anything that shows Jim looking up to his big brother/thinking he is the coolest thing ever.

While this isn't unadulterated "yay, winona" its a beautiful portrayal of her as an actual woman rather than a wicked disney stereotype. And while only a few chapters of this are exclusively focused on Winona, its an amazing read: It's the Illogical series by waldorph. I have actually already read that before, though I might go back and do some re-reading now, because you're totally right, it can never be understated! That's actually one of my favorite Winona's ever - loving and protective and perfectly in sync with Jim and still kind of a crappy mom anyway.

I have totally made waldorph's Winona my canon winona in my head. Her 'yay, team' comment might very well be my favorite thing ever :)
