Looking for a Kirk/Spock fic where Jim is dying

My friend read a reboot Trek fic here on LJ awhile back and I'd really like to read it. It featured Jim being best friends with Gaila, the pairing was Kirk/Spock, it was multi-chapter, and Kirk was dying. My friend doesn't remember if he died or not, or anything else about the fic, but if this rings any bells please let me know! We'd both like to read it!

I don't remember the name of the actual fic, but is it the one where Kirk is a famous author, he wrote a book about his experiences on Tarsus, and Spock is a fan?
