Let me start by saying that I am familiar only with the original Star Trek episodes so I have no idea how much of this story follows canon and how much of it is strictly AU.

I remember several parts of the story clearly, but not the title, or author, and I have a vague feeling it was incomplete. I also think it was probably a Sentinel fusion, with Kirk and Spock as the S/G pair, but I could be wrong about that. If it was a fusion, I likely read it on Keira Marcos' Rough Trade site, but I've looked through the links posted for past stories on that site and didn't find it. (But, not all authors post links to their work once the site is cleared for a new challenge.)

It begins shortly after the Enterprise has been involved in evacuating a large number of Vulcans from their planet (that was, I think, subsequently destroyed in some sort of attack.) At least one other Federation ship was destroyed, most of that crew perished, in the course of the events that led up to or were involved in the evacuation/rescue.

The Enterprise has been sent back to Earth, (or whatever planet the Academy is on) and Kirk offers the use of his private home to Spock and Spock's parents who are on the Enterprise with them. Kirk's home was previously owned by a Vulcan ambassador and Kirk had never changed many of the aspects that had made it Vulcan-friendly such as having a meditation room, and having Vulcan menu items in the kitchen automation.

Kirk and Spock undergo a hostile Review Board inquiry about the destruction of the other ship. One of the members of the Board lost a close relative (son? grandson? nephew?) who was part of the crew, and wants to blame his death on Kirk and Spock's actions.

One part that I distinctly remember is that Kirk discusses with Spock some gossip Spock had been told about how badly Kirk had ended a relationship with a girl in the past, but Kirk explains he dumped her when she tried to lie about using birth control in order to get "accidentally" pregnant by him, when he'd made it clear he wasn't looking for that type of relationship.

I hope this is enough information that someone recognizes it, and could point me where to find it.

The reason you can't find it anywhere is it from Keira Marcos' evil author day, I think. I know it's one of her stories, but one of her unfinished previews. So yeah, that's where you'll find it. Good luck! :D

I looked for her work, based on this recommendation, and it looks like a person has to REGISTER FOR HER SITE in order to look at her work even long enough to decide whether one wants to read it? That seems ... kinda draconian.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply!

I certainly understand why she would want registration before people can COMMENT; that makes complete and perfect sense to me. I used to work on a forum that supported a computer game, and believe me, I know all about how entitled the general public can be. :-) What seems strange to me is that she requires registration before people can READ, which is a separate activity from commenting; I'd think she'd at least let people read the first few pages of a story, so they know if they want to go through the hassle of registering.

But, as you say, her site. Sounds like it's not for me, though...

My site used to be fully open to the public, until a reader threatened to cut my head off because I didn't update fast enough to suit him.

Draconian? Shrugs. It's not the word I'd prefer but I've certainly been called worse by people who actually called themselves fans of my work.

I consider myself -- proactive in the defense of my own mental health.

Edited to add: The best (reliable) membership plug-in I could find for my site doesn't allow for previews. It is what it is.

As a minion this thread was already making me irritated. I hadn't realized they'd gone that far... seriously I think me and Cinna need to build a snowman ;)

It wasn't member's only reading before; I believe the change happened earlier in the year. Not sure what triggered it, other than possibly another variation on the entitled asshole theme. You might find some of her shorter stuff on some Stargate: Atlantis LJ forum--that's her main fandom. (Assuming you read Stargate: Atlantis, anyway.)

I'm not sure I'd call it "draconian," given that it's free and quite simple to register, and it seems like most requests get approved quickly. I'd save that word for someone who friends-locked everything on their LiveJournal and doesn't accept friend requests....... not that I know anyone like that or anything.....

Actually, I think that fic isn't on her site, but on her EAD community on LJ: http://evilauthorday.livejournal.com/. Of course this might not help you, because I think you have to become a member to read things there, so you might not want to do that. Although, if you've read it before, you might already be a member?

Just an update to say Keira Marco's EAD posts are now on Dreamwidth. To read them you must have an account and join the Evilauthorday community, but a simple free account is all that is needed and one no longer requires an invite to obtain it.
