Ok, I am new here and really happy to have found this place. I am looking FICs that focus on the early building of Jim and Spock's relationship.

1) Relationship has rocky or unsure or antagonistic start but they learn over time how to relate and get along (and maybe that they love each other)
2) So I love slash Kirk/Spock but this is not a requirement--the friendship/pre-slash building is the important part
3) TOS or AU is fine
4) The longer the FIC the better
5) Slow builds own my soul

Examples of this would be like
TOS Progression by KCS Friendship non-slash (a 5 times/1 time story)

or

AU Observations by Anon-J-Anon
This FIC is like over 400 k words and the first 120k are pure relationship building and its so wonderful.

BONUS Points: If there is smart! kirk (but not super!), protective!ness, and awesome bridge crew, & Spock narrator

PLEASE NO uhura bashing! (love how its handled in Observations)

Much love and thanks for your time and energy!

oh, and here are some more! I also like a slow build. Feel the burn!

Veritas by TheProblematique. a little bit on the fluffy side, but it's about 186k and complete, and kirk and spock are both pining fools in it ;)

Atlas by Angel Baby1; it does feature a believable smart kirk, and was also a slow build.

and finally..."Home" by Lanaea. Also a very slow build, and also a WIP and probably will remain that way; but I feel that where the author left it, it could have ended. It was actually the fic that converted me to the K/S pairing.

it starts off with them friends, but does end with slash. There was a plot point she introduce when she stopped updating, but as I said, and as many of the reviewers also feel; the story could end happily where she left off. There is no graphic sex scenes though, so if that's a must...I would steer clear. Other than that, it's well worth the read. Veritas is amazing, definitely check it out.

thanks for following up

There does not need to be graphic sex or anything (though that has its own place I suppose). I care mostly about the story and to know that there is a decent ending even if all plot theards are not tied up.

then I think it would be perfect! Sorry, I felt the need to point out the sex thing. I've seen some K/S fics get slammed for not having sex scenes (why in the world people would complain to the author about their choice to write sex is beyond me) but I wasn't sure if that was a must for you. I to, don't have to have a sex scene to enjoy a story. In fact, in some instances, it can take away from it.

I totally agree with you! sex can really cheapen a fic for me, if it's not used correctly. Sex, to me, has to be built up too, and handled delicately. And you're right, sometimes a simple gesture is all a scene needs to make it perfect. I have not read so wise we grow, but i hear great things. I really need to read it, like yesterday, lol.
